Celebrating Easter, upcoming events and ominous developments in the news show the need to embrace principles over politics

Thought for the Week

Luke 24, 1-8

24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

What’s Going On?

Words From the Elders

Mrs. Anne Crowder at Patterson Library, March 30 2024.

On Saturday March 30th, Mr. Nugent and I had the opportunity to sit down with Mrs. Anne Crowder. Mrs. Crowder was recently honored during Patterson Library’s Women’s History Month Celebration.

She grew up in Lubbock from an early age, and her oral history interview touches on how East Lubbock used to be a haven for black businesses, including her family’s own cafe.

Mrs. Crowder also talks about attending Tech when it was still not accepting of black students, and some of the discrimination she experienced in those days.

We will publish the interview this Wednesday, so stay tuned.

Down the Prairie Dog Hole

Is Free Speech Under Attack?

The FBI seems to be visiting Americans for exercising the freedom to speak their minds. This is a foundational freedom, and one that is supposed to be essentially untouchable by the government.

Some people seem to be ok with the infringement of our constitutional rights as long as it’s against people they don’t like.

We believe all our rights are granted by God and should therefore be almost completely untouchable by government, even for people with whom we disagree.

In fact, when I was coming up, even in grade school, we were taught that one should stand up for everyone’s freedom of speech, even if we disagreed with what they were saying, or found it to be hateful or upsetting. Everyone has the right to speak their mind. The phrase was, “I totally disagree with what you are saying, but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it.”

I’m not sure how many people agree with this statement nowadays, especially within government.

We found a recent interview where the FBI seems to have violently raided the offices of a group of black nationalist, socialist community activists, solely because the group was speaking against one the Biden Administrations policies.

Key Bridge Collapse

When we lived near Baltimore, we used to frequently travel the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Terrible pun intended here, but the collapse of that structure left us personally “shook”.

There are several lesser known factors about this tragedy that go deeper than the obvious, and also underscore the need to be prepared.
