Photos from Mrs. Billie Caviel's 90th Birthday Party
On Saturday 26 July 2025, The Lubbock Roots Historical Arts Council threw a birthday bash for Mrs. Billie Caviel. She and her late husband Alfred opened the first black-owned pharmacy in Lubbock. The building still stands at its original location off of 19th and Avneue A, but it now houses the Caviel’s Museum of African American History.
A huge crowd turned out to support and congratulate Mrs. Caviel. Our young photographer Nate Jenkins was on hand to capture images from the celebration.
Mr. Leon Williams told us that Mrs. Caviel was one of the early black members of the Lubbock Independent School Board. Although he and Mrs. Caviel butted heads when they first met while helping coordinate a Juneteenth Festival, they eventually became colleagues, and all of that changed.
Mrs. Shirley Green said that Mrs. Caviel always supported the Lubbock Roots Historical Arts Council, specifically their endeavors with the First Friday Arts Trail.
Mr. Alexander has known the Caviel family since 1963. His fondest memories involve working at Caviel’s Pharmacy. He was neighbors with the Caviels, and it almost felt like they were family; they will always be special to him.
It goes without saying that we wish many more happy birthdays to Mrs. Billie Caviel, and would like to thank all of the friends and family members who made this celebration an event to remember.
