Eugene Roquemore, a community photographer active in “The Village” from the 50’s to the 90’s, used to advertise with the slogan, “let us tell your true story in pictures”.
When they say a picture is worth a thousand words, that’s what they are really getting at. Pictures bring the past to life in a way that can speak to us like no other medium. It can literally take a thousand words or more to tell the story that a great picture tells us instantly.
That’s why Grandma and Auntie ‘nem always made sure to safe guard their photo albums in the event of emergency. Pictures are memories, frozen in time, that thaw in the gaze of the right viewer.
That’s why the Focus LBK crew is holding the inaugural Village Picture Day event. We ask that you bring your historical photos by Caviel’s Museum of African American History on Saturday February 8th.
We will scan them, and we may use them in a documentary film we are planning. We may also use them to illustrate articles on this site, or produce artwork.
In exchange, we’ll make a timeless 5x7 monochrome print of you and your family or friends to mark the occasion.
We’re looking for any photo of you or your family and friends, taken in Lubbock - especially East Lubbock. Pics can be from the 1990’s and before; the older the better.

What’s Going On Week of January 13, and Beyond - A Slight Return
We had a few new event ads sent to us after our publication deadline, but they are high quality events so we wanted to be sure to get them out there.
