The Jazzy Christmas Concert 2025
A great event with good food, a dope raffle, plus smooth holiday jazz sprinkled with just the right amount of percussion from around the world
This past Saturday, 13 December, saw the return of a West Texas institution: The Jazzy Christmas Concert, put on by the Roots Historical Arts Council. If you have attended one of these smooth jazz concerts before, you know they are an exceptional evening out.
As always the food was delicious. The food service stations were evenly distributed in a horseshoe shape around the perimeter of the reception area. The fare including coconut breaded chicken breast, sandwiches, fruits and cheeses, and a mashed potato station featuring tender brisket and all the sides to top them with.
This year’s raffle was especially dope, too. Mrs. Sherrell Thomas outdid herself. One of the most coveted prizes was a Blue Jazzman, custom painted by local artist Jason Glikas. This author put all of his 35 raffle tickets in the bag for this item, but still didn’t win it. However, the couple who won it heard me comment how much I liked it, and they actually gifted it to me! Thank you again!
Lubbock native musicians Tom Braxton, Joy Harris, Yaurian Horton, Sheena Fadeyi-Flores, Corey Powell, and Chantell Stubblefield-Bagley gelled into a funky, festive collective to rock this year’s event. Mr. Braxton also brought along exquisite percussionist Len Barnett, polished vocalist Pervis Evans, and the dapper professional Eric Willis on the organ. These last three really added just the right touch to make this year’s concert stand out.
