On Monday 28 April 2025, the Lubbock Chapter of the NAACP held a town hall meeting for Erskin Jenkins, a Texas Tech student who was shot and killed by a Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputy in November 2024. Mrs. Phyllis Gant, who helped arrange the event, correctly pointed out that hardly anyone had ever heard about this incident in the five months since it occurred. In fact, her Facebook posts alerted our team to the incident.

There appears to have only been one or two local media stories about this shooting, which remains shrouded in rumor due to the silence of local law enforcement and media. Apparently Jenkins' parents, Sharon and Elvis Jenkins, have not been able to obtain satisfactory information from the Sheriff's Office.

Mrs. Jenkins told us that, five months later, they still have yet to see unedited body camera footage, nor an autopsy report. Furthermore, the documents they have received have been so heavily redacted as to be useless. The Jenkins family also tried to speak with representatives from the District Attorney's office here, to little or no avail.

In contrast, Mrs. Gant, who lost a son to black-on-black violence some years ago, informed those assembled that she had exactly the opposite experience with the Dallas Police. They were professional, and immediately forthcoming with information pertinent to her son's tragic demise.

The contrast leads inevitably to suspicion about the narrative produced by local authorities, who claim young Mr. Jenkins was severely intoxicated and holding hostages at gunpoint at a home in Wolfforth on the night of his death.

The Sheriff's office claims that when their deputies responded to a 911 call from within the home, they saw Mr. Jenkins brandishing a weapon through a window. An unknown deputy or deputies then fired multiple rounds, striking Mr. Jenkins at least 12 times.

Mr. Jenkins' family, friends and supporters all testified at the town hall that the behavior alleged by law enforcement seemed incompatible with the bright young Tech student they all knew and loved.
